about

One evening in the 70s when I was a piano student at the Conservatoire de Musique à Montréal, practicing a sonata, alone in the deserted building, or so I thought, I heard, coming from a studio down the corridor, a mysterious and enchanting sound. I stopped playing, filled with wonder, hooked by the waves of sound that washed over me like a love song from the far reaches of the universe.

The very next day I began learning to play the ondes Martenot. In 1978, I was awarded a Premier Prix Concours as a player of this divine instrument. I went on to become a member of the Ensemble d’Ondes de Montréal, participating in many concerts and recording sessions in Canada, the United States, and Europe.

As well as playing the ondes, I was also composing and arranging music for film, television, the theatre, and discs, including choral works and songs of all kinds. These commissions were so demanding of my time that I had to stop performing on my beloved ondes Martenot. Then, in 2000, my life changed: I met the psychoanalyst, writer, and lecturer Guy Corneau, and he asked me to participate in and provide musical accompaniment for the large seminars that he was organizing in Quebec and in Europe.

By participating in these Productions Cœur.com seminars, in the activities and training sessions led by spiritual teacher and author Pierre Lessard, and in the Vivre en Santé workshops and retreats led by Guy and Pierre, I rediscovered the pleasure of playing and improvising. Sliding the metal ring along its wire in front of the keyboard during moments of introspection and meditation, I let my soul sing freely, touched just as I was the very first time I had heard these pure and sonorous vibrations.

Why does sliding and dancing the ring along my instrument’s wire make me feel so loving and peaceful?

Maybe it’s because the sound waves that come from it are of the same form as the vibrating waves of inner space which, according to Christine Angelard in La médecine soigne, l’amour guérit (Medecine Treats, Love Heals), “take the form of a supple sine curve and re-establish the circulating movement of life throughout the body.”

It is in this spirit of encouraging self awareness and union with inner space and peace that the music of the CD, Ondes à l’âme, was created.
